Local standout Beers enjoys jet sport

By Mike Ferraro
Poughkeepsie Journal

Editor's note: Billy Beers, a Hyde Park resident, competed in the International Jet Sports Boating Association (IJSBA) tour from 1991 to 1997. He shared his thoughts about the world of personal watercraft.

What do you think the popularity of jet skiing is compared to recent years?

It's grown astronomically. I can't put it into numbers. Since the sit-down boats came out, it's just booming. It's like snowmobiles on water is what it comes down to.

What attracts people to the sport?

The freedom, and anybody can do it. I believe these days they give you a safety course right away if you're a new buyer. It's mandatory that you take safety courses. (Overall), it's just the freedom and the scenery is the biggest part of it.

What advice would you give to someone starting in the sport?

First, you're going to look for what type of equipment you're going to use. Are you going by yourself, or with passengers? Then you look at performance. Do you want to race around with the guys a little bit? It depends on who the individual is, and how they want to pursue it. Safety is a major concern. You need a flag and whistles on board. I personally like the competition part of it, and being close with the guys; I like that.

What do you consider good spots to go jet skiing up and down the Hudson?

The Poughkeepsie area isn't too bad. Parking is a little limited. Peekskill isn't bad. I've been so many places.
