Interest level in fishing adapts with the timesBy Pete Colaizzo Poughkeepsie Journal
Editor's note: Don Traver has been in the fishing business for
more than 50 years. He currently owns Don's Tackle Service in Red
Hook and previously owned a fishing equipment store in Poughkeepsie.
He shared his thoughts recently on a lifetime in the world of fishing.
What's the interest level like in the sport of fishing
these days?
I think it stays fairly steady. We're seeing more adults getting into fishing at a later age, but probably not as many kids doing it.
Kids today have too many other things to do. Nowadays, there's too much sports and games to take them away from fishing.
Where does most of your business come from?
In my end, it's the fly fishermen, adult beginners. We get these yuppie puppies that want to go fly fishing, so they come in here. It's the in thing with those guys. That's the change. I think different types of people are picking it up now.
What would you recommend for someone who wants to start from scratch in
fishing?
I'd set them up for conventional spin fishing. And entry level outfit would include a basic tackle box, a spinning rod and reel and line to go with it.
What do you recommend in terms of bait?
Most kids start out with live bait. Worms and minnows are as good as anything. Just put some on the end of a hook, send them out and tell them to have fun.
The other option is to use lures -- spinners, plugs that kind of stuff. There is really less motion to go through with lures. If you use a spinner, you toss it on and crank it back in.
In your opinion, then, which is better -- live bait or lures?
Some people don't want to stick a hook through a minnow. Everybody's different. I say try both ways to see what you like. It depends on whether you are squeamish.
Where would you suggest as a fishing location for a beginner?
There's plenty of good fishing in this area, whether it's lake or stream fishing. It's all good fishing.
