Did you know that the oldest extant Jewish house in North America
sits just off Route 9W on the Ulster County-Orange County border?
Probably not, since the Gomez Mill House -- founded by a Sephardic Jew,
Luis Moses Gomez, as a fur trading post in about 1714 -- has long been
one of the region's best-kept historical secrets.
"It is one of the most unique and beautiful sites in the area and
reflects the rich history of the area through all the families that have
occupied it," says Robert Jacobs, president of the Gomez Foundation
for Mill House and caretakers of the property since 1984.
It has been home to patriots during the revolution, artists, gentleman
farmers, statesmen and, in the early 1900s, papermaker and writer
Dard Hunter, who established the paper mill that still sits on the
site.
It's the oldest house on the National Register of Historic Places
in Orange County.
