The Chance a top venue for live music
The Chance nightclub is notable for
its interior flourishes. The club was one of several movie houses in the
1920s in Poughkeepsie, and signs of that incarnation are still evident
-- a sloping floor leading to a stage with a balcony overhanging.
Nowadays a bar is at the rear and instead of seats, small tables face
the front. "In those days the idea was that a night out was to be an experience.''
"You were given the royal treatment. Nowadays theaters don't glorify the
act of going out.''
Flanking the stage at balcony level were two replicas of Egyptian mummy
cases. They stood upright -- a sign that, in this building, an exotic
sort of fun was the design approach.
A complete modern sound system has been installed, and today, The Chance
hosts national acts of nearly every interest. Chuck Berry, The Toasters,
B.B. King (with, of course, Lucille) are just a few of the acts to have
graced The Chance's stage.
