Once called "the jewel of the Hudson" in Harper's Bazaar magazine, the charm of Rhinebeck lies not just in its rolling hills of farmland, but also in its unique and worthwhile places to visit in its small 35 square miles.

Whether it's the traditional general merchandise stores in the village, the annual summertime Dutchess County Fair, the many antique shows held throughout the year or other attractions that pique your interest, Rhinebeck has a cornucopia of sites that shouldn't be missed.

Rhinebeck is home to the oldest inn in the United States, operating for over 130 years. The Beekman Arms (4 Mill St., 845-876-7077) has been a meeting place for some of America's greatest presidents, most recently including President Clinton.

You can't eat this gingerbread cottage, but check out the one-room Delamater House (Montgomery Street, 845-876-7077). Experience the thrill of riding in an open cockpit airplane at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodome, 42 Stone Church Road, (845-758-8610) and tour the remarkable collection of planes dating back as far as 1909.

Upstate Theater attracts people from across the region because it presents foreign and artistic films. The nearby Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is another popular attraction. This active museum presents antique aircraft, including World War I planes, in action

The kids and the kids-at-heart will enjoy the famous Dutchess County Fair (845-876-4001), one-week of cotton candy, 4-H animal shows, roller coasters, and pie-eating contests. For a panoramic view of the Hudson River, nature lovers must tour the 40 acres of the Wilderstein Preservation (Morton Road, 845-876-4818), a Queen Anne mansion.

Antique enthusiasts won't be disappointed with Rhinebeck's three antique centers, including the Rhinebeck Arms Antique Market housing antique dealers, small antique shops, and many craft and antique fairs held throughout the year.

For entertainment, Rhinebeck boasts its own Theater Society, Chamber and Music Society, and the Center for Performing Arts. Although small in size, Rhinebeck is large in attractions. Whether you enjoy antiques, a fun filled day at the County fair, or just browsing the many village shops, Rhinebeck is a collection of entertaining options for everyone.
